October is proving to be a busy month in the music classroom. Kindergarten is singing songs, dancing to Just Dance and using Boomwackers (tubes that play musical tones 0). First grade is busy learning their songs for the concert on October 19 at 6:00 here in the Barbour cafeteria. Second grade has been performing speech pieces and learning how to do ostinati. Ask them what an ostinato is. Third grade just got their recorders so they are exploring what they can do. Some students still have not brought in their $3.00 and therefore they are without a recorder for class. Fourth grade has been learning a West African song called "Funga Alafa Ashay Ashay" with hand movements. They have also created new body percussion for it. They are also doing a terrific job singing their songs for the concert. Fifth grade has worked on a silly speech piece called Wibbleton Wobbleton with hand claps.
6th grade band is off to a great start. They have learned three notes and can play Hot Cross Buns. I look forward to their first concert in December. The 7th and 8th grade band has really started working together, and they will be ready to perform in the concert on October 19 at 6:00. Finally my 8th grade general music class learned how to write rhythms and perform them as a class. They are also reading about modern musicians, listening to their music and and writing opinions about them.
We hope to see everyone at the October 19th concert!!!
